CURRENT OWNER'S THOUGHTS:
We drove up a little hill, turned at the river and there on the left were two venerable buildings from another era.

"Would you stop the car, please," I asked my realtor, "I'd like to look around."

"It's not for sale," he responded, pulling over for me to get out.

I poked my nose in the door of the tiny functioning U.S. Post Office, then ambled down a slop forested with ancient elms. At the bottom, and some distance away, I spotted a tall, stately, wood-clad tower embraced by other giant trees.

And that was it. In less than fifteen minutes, I discovered and decided I wanted to buy the 1890's river town of Ryde, California.

What sparked my interest was, of course, the uniqueness and charm of the high-sitting buildings and their lovely setting - on a gentle bend of one of America's great rivers, the Sacramento. Also, the view I caught in the opposite direction, all the way to a long line of purple hills, California's coastal range some fifty miles away. But, after completing my look-see, it was the wide range of possibilities for developing that site that completely blew me away!

My tenure as resident manager/caretaker, in addition to being Ryde's owner, have proven to be years of measureless happiness. A child of New York City and a former Pasadena wife and mother, I now write beside a Ryde glass door looking out on patches of blue seen between the leafy arms of elm trees. And, at nightfall, my privacy is protected not by curtains or shades, but by enormous orange trees. In season, they perfume the air with their blossoms, and then delight the eye with the sight of their fruit - like funny, orange poke-a-dots against a thick thatch of their dark, shiny leaves.

Best of all, I delight in standing on the stair landing at sunset, with the towering redwoods I planted on my left, and the equally majestic elms on my right, feeling a light breeze mess with my hair as I watch the great, glowing apricot orb sink behind the hills and draw down with it all of its multi-colored draperies to bring-on gentle night.

I love life here, but it's time for me to let go and leave Ryde to others for their dreaming/dream building.
